The young man seems uncommital, but friendly. Young in years, but already an experienced warrior and gentleman...

"Well, that explains it. I grew up in Ringlo Hall in my grandfather Menander's court. What led you to leave Ringlo Hall? Will you and your men stay with us after we reach them or will you resume your normal scouting duties for the army?"

Erdath slides one hand to the sword at his belt and the other to his spell component pouch. I try to move my horse off the trail as quietly as possible.

"I am the eldest son of my family, and it is my duty to serve the baron of Glendower as a soldier, like my father and my grandfather did back in the days when they were low-ranked knights in the service of the Earl of Vestfold."

As you ask him your second question, he grins again, mildly.

"If you desire it, we will join your forces, Lord Baron of Newgate."

He says that without irony. Indeed, the title of Baron is now Sven's...

Mant nods silently, after that sparkle of ingeniousness falling back into his usual low-hearted mood...

---------------------------------------

Gawain suddenly jumps down from his horse and forces his mount into the snow-covered woods next to the road. "Come on, quickly! Dragons!"

He points towards the clouded sky, as if the danger was obvious and all but him were just blind.

"Dragons!!! Run!!!"

Gawaine's words are met with stunned silence as the ramifications of his words sink in. Sven is abnormally quiet after his talk with Gawaine...

Sven will dismount and follow Gawaine into the woods, leading his horse as quickly as possible.

Theron also dismounts quickly and leading my horse into the woods. Once there, I will scan the sky, looking for the dragons that Gawaine sees. I draw my longbow and prepare to fight if we are spotted.

Most of the trip since the army camp, Jigimy has been preoccupied with controlling his "mount". So much so, he almost passes Sven & Gawaine before he realizes they dismounted.

Once he notices, he hurriedly attempts to veer over to the wooded area for cover. He dismounts and tries to send the dog, repeatedly, over to the other horses. After 3 failed attempts, he throws up his hands in disgust and takes a position near Sven.

Down on one knee, crossbow loaded, Jigimy whispers to Sven... "What's going on?" After getting Sven's response...he continues..."Searching my memory, I remember a song of a young noble called Gawaine who saved a village called Cicatri Vale from an undead curse. Do you think that's him?" Jigimy nods over toward Gawaine.

Whispering again: "Could be, I am not familiar with the story..."

Sven grabs the harness of Jigimy's riding dog and leads it safely back into the woods with the other mounts.

Not really caring all too much about that royal nonsense everybody's been preoccupied with lately, Path has kept himself aside most of the time. Nobility, titles and warmongering do not interest him much. Mostly he'd been sitting on a barrel alone, riding in the back of the group by himself or sitting in front of the tents at night.
He has been thinking. Thinking about the things that have passed in his life over the last few weeks. First of all, he had lost his family and his home. He doesn't quite know if losing his home was a bad thing, however. Secondly, he had somehow fallen in a chasm and ended up in the attic of the Maiden's Rest Inn, where he discovered strange powers. Was he turning into a ghost? It couldn't be, those were fairy tales. But with what had happened beside that... Maybe fairy tales were more than just that?

-----

Gawaine warned for 'dragons', so Path moves his horse to the side of the road where everybody else is. He grabs his bow, nocks an arrow and aims it at the sky, where everybody is looking now.

"... what the hell are dragons?", he whispers to no-one in particular, dismounting.

From Draussa:

I sling to the ground upon the disturbance ahead, bringing Bobby beside me. I am much better on my feet than any pony. I guide the two of them to side of the road, near the others, but not directly next to them.
I tell Bobby to keep under cover by the Pony and shrubbery as much as possible and to "Quiet."

My hand is on my Mace, ready to fight.

Cold wind blows over the road, and waves of snow and ice limit your sight to a few yards...

The eyes of the horses widen, and, desperately, they try to get away...

Killer, so unusual for his bossy personality, whimpers and cowers down behind Jigimy...

Bobby, the small beastman that had been standing next to Draussa, suddenly points above into the sky, following the direction of Gawaine's sword...

And there it comes...

You feel like being drowned in a sea of fear...

And loose your minds in a world formed of cries and shouts...

And then, the world burns...

And your hearts become cold...

You awake.

This is the darkest night you have ever seen.

You find yourself lying where you had turned to face the dragon.

Except for Killer, all your mounts are gone.

Wet and light snow is falling on the frozen land...

[OOC: So, we all fainted from fear!?!]

With a grim expression, Sven will get up, brushing off the snow and look around. Can he tell from the horses' tracks if they ran off or if something else happened to them (like they were eaten by the dragon)? If they fled, did they go in the same general direction or scatter?

"I am open to suggestions, but I think we should try to find our horses..."

Jigimy's eyes open suddenly, as he takes a huge gasp. Realizing he's still alive, he rolls over onto his belly. Holding his crossbow & club close, he looks around to gain his bearings and find his friends. Feeling Killer beside him, he looks over & whispers sarcastically... "Some fierce creature you are..."

With a nervous but still hushed voice...... "Draussa?..... Sven?....... Are you still there?"

Theron gets up and looks around. "what the hell just happened? And where did the horses go?" He then remembers the dragon and begins scanning the sky to make sure it is not still flying above us. "how long have I been on the ground? I'm with you Sven, finding the horses is a good idea. i'm not big on the idea of walking all the way to where Gawain's men are."

[Correct. That's Drachenangst.Actually, I borrowed this concept from Dragonlance, since I thought that it would fit for the half-deity dragons of the North.]

No visible tracks seem left of your poor, madened mounts... The snow has already hidden everything that could give a concrete hint...

You can't even tell how long you lied here on the frozen earth...

Gawaine, his face hidden under his helmet, has got on his feet long before you others and pats the snow from his tunic.

After he has repeatedly tried to clean his throat, he speaks up in sour voice: "Forget the beasts. - To search for them would only lead us into territory we don't know. It will be hard to reach the watchtower where my men are waiting, but I think it's pretty much the only choice we have if Sven really wants to get to Dustcape in time. - I guess it will take us about... 12 days until we meet the scouts. - That or eight days of useless traveling back to Ungulian."

The knight, adjusts his belt and unsheats his sword to examine it for possible damage...
